Recommendation CM/Rec(2011)6 of the Committee of Ministers to Member States on Intercultural Ddialogue and the Image of the Other in History Teaching

These are a series of recommendations to promote the teaching of history in the context of intercultural dialogue. The Committee emphasises the function of history teaching in raising awareness of cultural diversity, providing better knowledge regarding the relationship between cultures, developing a multi-perspective approach in the analysis of history, enabling future citizens to think critically and to give their informed consent to “live together” in complex, changing contexts whose developments are often unpredictable or unexpected. The recommendations also relate to the following areas:

  • Orientations of reforms to history teaching with a view to its contribution to intercultural development
  • History teaching, dialogue and post-conflict situations
  • Methods and educational approach
  • History books and teaching material
  • Media education
  • Skills more specifically linked with the learning of the history of others
  • Roles, competencies and training of history teachers
  • Opening up schools and partnerships
  • The international dimension
